weekend's University of Kentucky
Jazz Ensemble and UK Wind
Ensemble joint concert featuring a world premiere performance by the noted composer Bob Mintzer. The concert of Mintzer music, which is free
and open to all, is scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday, April 26, in the Concert Hall of the Singletary Center for the Arts.
A Grammy award-winning performer and composer, Mintzer will be on hand to perform with UK's acclaimed jazz and wind ensembles during their upcoming concert program featuring several of his works. In addition, Mintzer will present the world premiere of his newest composition, a concerto for solo tenor saxophone and wind ensemble titled "GO!" UK Bands served as the organizer of a consortium of 37 universities from across United States who commissioned Mintzer's "GO!"
Mintzer has had a diverse career as a freelance musician in New York City, and has written more than 200 big band arrangements during his 34-year career. Much of his work is performed all over the world by both student and professional bands alike. His own group, the Bob Mintzer Big Band, has been nominated for four Grammy awards and won a Grammy for best large jazz ensemble recording in 2001 with "Homage to Count Basie" from the Digital Music Products label.

UK's Jazz Ensemble and Wind Ensemble are highly select organizations of the finest wind and percussion students from the UK School of Music. Both ensembles have established outstanding regional, national and international reputations through performances at such regional and national events as the College Band Directors National Association National and Regional Conferences, Mid-West International Band and Orchestra Clinic, and the Kentucky Music Educators Association Conference. Both groups have recorded extensively and have been nominated for Grammy consideration by several leading recording companies.
The UK Jazz Ensemble performs under the direction of Miles Osland, professor of saxophone and director of jazz studies. The UK Wind Ensemble performs under the direction of John Cody Birdwell, director of UK Bands.
