LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 19, 2008) − Dr. Jay A. Perman, dean of the University of Kentucky College of Medicine and vice president for clinical affairs, is the 2008 recipient of the Murray Davidson Award presented by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). This award recognizes an outstanding clinician, educator and scientist who has made significant contributions to the field of pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition. Perman is an active and continuing force in the practice of pediatric medicine in addition to his administrative duties as dean of the college.

“Dr Perman is being honored for his lifelong contributions to his subspecialty field in medicine, pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition. In addition, his colleagues selected to recognize and celebrate some valued personal attributes, among the list included: ‘visionary, innovative, compassionate, teacher, mentor, physician and friend.’ ” said Dr. John B Watkins, a former mentor at Childrens Hospital in Boston, while presenting the award.

A passionate advocate for the health care of children, Perman continues to practice medicine and teach in “Dean's Clinic.”  Dean's Clinic gives medical students, residents and UK undergraduates the unique opportunity to see the dean as a practicing physician and gives the dean the opportunity to engage in interprofessional education. Perman's career in pediatric medicine is noted for his many contributions to the health and well-being of children. One of his first accomplishments came early in his career with the development of breath tests to assess gastrointestinal function in children – avoiding the invasive tests that were commonly used. He is a graduate of Northwestern University where he received his medical degree followed by a fellowship at Harvard Medical School. Among his many accomplishments, Perman has been listed in The Best Doctors in America, Who's Who in America and the Consumer's Guide to Top Doctors (nationwide). He is a member of numerous professional organizations, holds positions on state and national medical committees as well as served on editorial boards for pediatric and gastroenterology journals. He currently serves on the Administrative Board of the Association of American Medical Colleges’ Council of Deans. Perman became dean of the UK College of Medicine and vice president for clinical affairs in 2004. Recently, he received the President's Award for Diversity at UK.
