LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 7, 2008) − The Markey Cancer Foundation recently celebrated its 30th anniversary. Originally established in October of 1978 by Dr. Ben Roach, the Markey Cancer Foundation has raised over $60 million, endowed six chairs and donated four buildings to create the UK Markey Cancer Center.

Formerly known as the McDowell Cancer Foundation, the Markey Cancer Foundation has flourished with the financial support of generous and gracious individuals, civic organizations, corporations, and businesses throughout the United States. The mission of the Markey Cancer Foundation is to support the UK Markey Cancer Center in the advancement of patient care and support, clinical and laboratory research, and education.

The foundation donated the four buildings that comprise the Markey Cancer Center. The first building, the Ben F. Roach Cancer Care Facility, was erected in 1986. Patient care is the highest priority and hallmark of the Ben F. Roach Cancer Care Facility. Each year, over 1,300 new cancer patients are evaluated and treated here. In 1989, the Dorothy Enslow Combs Cancer Research Building was added. The M. Margrite Davis and Ralph E. Mills Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy Facility was added in 1992 and is used both in research and patient care to improve diagnostic abilities and to understand the body's physiologic processes.

The most recent addition was in 2001 when the Marylou Whitney and John Hendrickson Cancer Facility for Women joined the campus. This facility enhances Markey's capabilities in many areas, including the treatment of breast, ovarian, and gynecologic cancers. The Whitney-Hendrickson building houses innovative multi-disciplinary outpatient clinics and programs that are designed to serve women and their families better.

"We are very proud of Markey’s tradition and are honored to continue the legacy," said foundation CEO Dr. Randall Rowland. "With a new hospital underway and state-of-the-art radiation treatments soon becoming available, we are poised to take this facility and the care it provides in this community to a new level – the highest quality of cancer patient care and research available anywhere. The future will be very exciting and we look forward to the tremendous continued support from our trustees, benefactors and friends.”
