Quake Expert to Discuss Dangers

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 2, 2009) − A Northwestern University geologist will
discuss real and perceived dangers of earthquakes in the Midwestern United States at 7 p.m.
Wednesday, Nov. 4, in the William T. Young Library Auditorium at the University of
Kentucky.
Seth Stein, the Deering Professor of Geological Sciences at Northwestern, will present "Giant Earthquakes in the Midwest: Hazards, Hype and Hard Choices."
Stein's research includes plate tectonics, earthquake seismology and earthquake hazards. He was an organizer of EarthScope, a national initiative to advance knowledge of the structure and evolution of North America.
He is a co-author of a widely used textbook on seismology, editor of the Journal of Geophysical Research, and author of more than 100 scientific papers.
His lecture will follow a reception at 6 p.m.
