LEXINGTON, Ky. (July 24, 2009) − A University of Kentucky program that
provides research experience to undergraduate students has received $300,000 from the National Science Foundation through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of
2009.
The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program, housed in the College of Engineering's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, provides an opportunity for undergraduate students at other institutions who do not have the chance to do research in electrical and computer engineering at their home institutions.
The NSF grant will provide support for 10 students to come to UK for eight weeks during the summers of 2010, 2011 and 2012. They will perform research with UK faculty, graduate students and research staff; go on field trips; attend workshops; and engage in social activities.
In past years, participants have come from New York, New Mexico and Puerto Rico, as well as from Kentucky's regional and private universities. Participants must be United States citizens or hold their green cards.
The REU program was active in 2006, 2007 and 2008, but was suspended this year due to lack of funding.
