LEXINGTON, Ky. (July 8, 2009) − Newly refurbished gowned waiting areas were
unveiled today at the Markey Cancer
Center's Comprehensive Breast Care Center, thanks to generous support from the Lexington
Legends, Appliance Distributors Inc. (ADI) and Design Link.
The refurbished areas are now warm and inviting to patients who have changed into exam gowns and are waiting for mammograms, said Craig Rogers, Markey outpatient services director.
"The new gowned waiting area adds elements of comfort and relaxation for our patients, who are in a situation that can be uncomfortable and sometimes frightening," Rogers said. "We probably would not have been able to do this without the help of the Legends, ADI and Design Link, and we are truly grateful for their support."
The impetus for the renovation came from Fredella Prather, of ADI, after she had her first mammogram at Markey.
"The waiting room was filled with women in gowns, in a very dreary setting," Prather said. "The amazing thing about Markey is that everyone there cares deeply about what they are doing. I was treated with every kindness. But that seemed to get a little lost by the time I spent in the waiting room."
Prather contacted her friend Ron Borkowski, senior corporate account executive for the Lexington Legends. In partnership with ADI and UK HealthCare, the team raised funds for the renovation through the Legends' Breast Cancer Brunch event and a silent auction of the pink jerseys the players wore for Breast Cancer Awareness Day. Designer Nancy Elam from Design Link donated her time to the project, and many others contributed time or materials.
"Everywhere I turned there were people willing to pitch in and help," Prather said. "The best part is that we are not finished. We will continue with various other exam and waiting areas at Markey until they are all updated."
The Legends organization has taken on the fight against breast cancer as the focus of the team's charitable efforts, Borkowski said.
"All of us will continue to fight breast cancer as best we can, and we are glad that, in some small way, we are able to make the patients more comfortable at Markey," Borkowski said.
