LEXINGTON, Ky. (June 18, 2009) – The fifth annual Markey Golf Classic and
related fundraising activities raised more than $425,000 for the Markey Cancer Foundation, which will go
toward cancer research and patient support programs at the University of Kentucky's Markey Cancer Center.
"I was very pleased to see a new record set at this year's auction, and I am very grateful for the continued support of our loyal sponsors," said Sally Humphrey, chairwoman of the Markey Cancer Foundation's board of directors. "In Kentucky, no issue is more important than health. It is significant that, even in these tough economic times, support for the Markey Cancer Foundation remains strong."
This year's tournament took place Monday, June 14, at Champion Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, with 86 participants registered.
Winners of the shotgun-start tournament were Sergio Melgar and Blake Edwards from UK HealthCare, with William Shively and Dermot Fagan from Dixiana Farm coming in second, and John and David Greathouse from Glencrest Farm taking third place. Closest-to-the-pin winners were Pete Cline and Maggie Woods, and the prize for longest drive went to Rodney Varner from Roche.
S&S Tire/Bridgestone returned this year as the presenting sponsor, contributing $25,000. Other major sponsors included: Ashford Stud/Coolmore America, Gainesway Farm, Lane’s End Farm, UK HealthCare, UK College of Medicine, Shawnee Farm, Mt. Brilliant Farm, Dixiana Farm, Waterville Insurance and Bloodstock Services.
