College of Pharmacy Interim Dean Named

LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 27, 2009) − Patrick J. McNamara, professor and chair in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy, has been appointed interim dean of the college during 2009-10 while the search for a new dean is conducted. Former Dean Kenneth B. Roberts stepped down from this position in April. According to UK Provost Kumble R. Subbaswamy, "Given his familiarity with the college, his leadership role in the college and its current initiatives and plans, I am convinced he will do an excellent job of completing the many tasks at hand and advancing the college."

McNamara received his doctorate in pharmaceutical sciences from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1979. He joined the faculty at UK in 1980 as an assistant professor. Prior to his appointment as chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences in January 2003, he served as director for the Division of Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Analysis and for the Division of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, as well as associate dean for Research and Graduate Studies.

McNamara has  joint appointments in the Graduate Center for Toxicology and the Markey Cancer Center. He is a fellow in the  American Association of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is on the editorial advisory board for the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences and serves as a reviewer for numerous journals.
