LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 23, 2009) – A fun, free, family-oriented
celebration for Arbor and Earth Days will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April
25, at The Arboretum, the official state
botanical garden of Kentucky, located at 500 Alumni Drive in Lexington on the University of
Kentucky campus.
The theme of the event is "Our Trees, Our Earth, Our Heritage," and will include more than 40 exhibitors, children's activities, a tree walk, tree planting, entertainment, and a giveaway of free tree seedlings.
This year's program features a special Heritage Skills and Crafts area from 19th-century life. Visitors will see how 19th-century farm tools were hand-crafted, which woods were used and why. Costumed interpreters from the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Site will demonstrate rail-splitting, spinning, and display a “touch table” of tools and artifacts from Lincoln’s time. Visitors will also learn about traditional uses of plants in dyeing, rope and fiber, and wattle fence construction. Children of all ages will enjoy heritage games and toys that Lincoln’s children would have used, brought by the Lexington History Center.
Throughout the festivities, visitors will be able to meet Abraham Lincoln, portrayed by Jim Sayre. Mr. Lincoln will also lead visitors on a morning tour of heritage trees that were alive during Lincoln’s time.
The Arboretum is able to present the day's activities free of charge, thanks to co-sponsors Kentucky American Water and Lexmark, and to other supporters, including the Lexington Fayette Urban County Government Environmental Commission, Kentucky Utilities, Big Beaver Tree Service, Community Tree Care, Inc., Commonwealth Credit Union, and Friends of The Arboretum.
