LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 15, 2009) – The University of Kentucky Center for Clinical and Translation Science (CCTS) will host the 2009 Clinical and Translational Science Spring Conference on April 23 at the Lexington Convention Center next to the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Lexington.

The conference will showcase translational research ongoing in UK's centers of excellence in medical research. The keynote speaker is Dr. Barbara Alving, director of the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Alving will discuss "Social Networking: a Critical Factor for Success in Biomedical Research."

“Dr. Alving's presentation will focus on the future direction of clinical and translational research across America and research teams of the future," said Dr. Geanie Umberger, assistant professor of neurology, UK College of Medicine, and director, Office for Communication and Public-Industry Relations, UK Center for Clinical and Translational Science. "This is important information for faculty and students because it gives them a glimpse of the direction of research in the future – successful research teams will be comprised of diverse, interconnected investigators all bringing unique strengths to the table to answer tough medical questions.”

Other speakers include Dr. C. William Balke, UK associate provost and director of the Center for Clinical and Translational Science, and Dr. Stephen W. Wyatt, dean, UK College of Public Health. They will speak on "Demystifying the Grant Review Process – Maximizing the Chances for Success."

“Because of the drastic reduction in NIH funding, it is important to prepare future investigators so they can successfully compete for research awards,” said Balke. “The goal of this workshop is to give advice and counsel to junior investigators on how to properly develop grant applications, which is something many investigators are not taught but learn by trial-and-error.”

The Center for Clinical and Translational Science is also sponsoring the 2009 2nd Annual REACH Symposium, hosted by the Office of Research and Engagement for Advancing Community Health (REACH). The symposium, a multidisciplinary research meeting aimed at fostering collaborations among UK faculty, trainees, and community-based professionals, will be April 24 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel and will focus on the theme of “From Cells to Society:  Fighting the Diabetes Epidemic through Translational Research.”
