LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 20, 2009) – A routine, one-hour procedure called a
screening colonoscopy can virtually eliminate your risk of dying from colorectal cancer, says
Dr. H. David Vargas, associate professor of surgery at the University of Kentucky College of
Medicine and section head of colorectal surgery.
Kentucky has one of the country's highest rates of colorectal cancer, the No. 2 cancer killer and ninth leading cause of all deaths nationwide.
In a guest column in Sunday's Lexington Herald-Leader, Vargas explains how regular screening colonoscopies can prevent most cases of colorectal cancer from ever developing. The column, timed for Colon Cancer Awareness Month, is part of an ongoing series of health columns by UK HealthCare experts appearing in each Sunday's edition of the Herald-Leader and online at BluegrassMoms.com.
