LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 17, 2009) − The University of Kentucky Wind
Ensemble will present a concert featuring pianist and contemporary American composer Carter Pann in a performance of his latest work,
"Concerto Logic." The concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, at the
Singletary Center for the Arts Concert Hall. This event
is free and open to the public.
Pann, an assistant professor of theory and composition at the University of Colorado at Boulder, is known for his blend of crafty, popular sounding idioms, subtle and unabashed humor, and haunting melodic writing. His work has been performed all around the world by ensembles and soloists alike.
Honors presented to Pann include a K. Serocki International Competition for Composers award for his Piano Concerto, a Charles Ives Scholarship from the Academy of Arts and Letters, and five ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers) composer awards. Pann's "Piano Concerto" was also nominated for a Grammy award as "Best Classical Composition of the Year" in 2001.
"Concerto Logic," commissioned by a consortium of university wind symphonies from throughout the United States, was inspired by games of chance, logic and strategy, both ancient and contemporary. The piece is written for wind ensemble and a piano solo.
The concert program will also include Paul Hindemith's Symphony in B-flat for Concert Band and several other selections by composers Samuel Barber, Donald Grantham and Jacques Press.
The University of Kentucky Wind Ensemble is conducted by John Cody Birdwell, director of bands at UK, and is a select concert ensemble consisting of the finest wind and percussion students from the UK School of Music.
