LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 9, 2009) – This weekend local opera audiences, as well as those in northern Kentucky and across the nation, can enjoy the talents of students from University of Kentucky Opera Theatre as the program presents concerts with the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra and an alumnus performs in a live broadcast from the Metropolitan Opera.

Vocalists from UK Opera Theatre will perform in two concert versions of the opera "Rigoletto" accompanied by the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra (KSO). The concerts will be presented for audiences in both northern and central Kentucky. The first program takes the stage at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, at Greaves Concert Hall, at Northern Kentucky University. The Lexington concert will follow at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 11, at the UK Singletary Center for the Arts

Giuseppe Verdi's "Rigoletto" tells a story of lust, betrayal and vengeance using lush musical language and tempestuous emotions. Audiences will recognize many of the melodies associated with the opera, such as "La donna è mobile" and "Caro nome."

For information on tickets for the UK Opera Theatre and KSO concert in northern Kentucky, contact the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra at (859) 431-6216. For ticket information on the Lexington concert, contact the Singletary Center ticket office at (859) 257-4929.

Additionally audiences across not only the Commonwealth, but the U.S. and Europe, will see UK alumnus Marty Singleton perform in the Metropolitan Opera's production of Giacomo Puccini's "La Rondine" this weekend. Singleton, a native of Willisburg, Ky., will perform two brief solos as a member of the opera's supporting cast.

This opera will be broadcast to audiences across the U.S. and Europe via the Metropolitan Opera Live in HD series, which airs the famed opera company's productions live at select movie theaters. Local audiences can see Singleton's turn in the Met's "La Rondine" at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, on movie screens at Regal Hamburg Pavilion 16 and Lexington Green Movies 8 in Lexington.
