Concert Band Presents Halloween Concert

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 23, 2008) − The University of Kentucky Concert
Band, under the direction of Carl Collins, will present a
Halloween Concert for a Bluegrass audience of goblins and ghouls. The performance is a family
friendly event; costumes are encouraged at the hair-raising concert, which will also host
trick-or-treating for kids. The free public concert will begin to haunt the campus at 7:30 p.m.
Tuesday, Oct. 28, at the Singletary Center for the Arts
Concert Hall.
The UK Concert Band Halloween Concert will include performances of "Night Dances" by Bruce Yurko; "The Vanished Army" by Kenneth J. Alford; and "Voodoo" by Daniel Bukvich. The group will also perform "Harvest Hymn" by Percy Aldridge Grainger under the direction of guest conductor Joe D. Moore, and "Shadow Rituals" by Michael Markowski under the direction of guest conductor Joe Tornello. Moore and Tornello are graduate students in the School of Music. They are pursuing the doctorate in wind conducting as students of John Cody Birdwell, director of bands at UK.
UK Concert Band is the newest large ensemble at UK School of Music and is comprised of music majors, non-music majors and talented musicians from the community.
Carl Collins is interim assistant director of bands in the UK School of Music, where he conducts the Concert Band and the Basketball Pep Band, serves as co-director of the Wildcat Marching Band, and teaches courses in marching band techniques.
Prior to coming to UK, Collins was the assistant director of bands and director of the Rocket Marching Band at University of Toledo for three years. His previous teaching experience includes eight years as a high school band director in the public schools of eastern Iowa. Collins received his bachelor's degree in clarinet performance and music education and his master's degree in band conducting from the University of Iowa.
