LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 6, 2008) − The University of Kentucky John Jacob Niles Center for American Music will host the 2008 annual meeting (pdf file) of the American Musicological Society (AMS) South-Central Chapter March 14-15, on the UK campus. The highlight of the two-day event will be a keynote address by Gail Zappa, wife of the late music legend Frank Zappa, and a free public concert of music by or that inspired Zappa performed by UK students and alumni. Zappa's presentation begins at 7:30 p.m., followed by the concert at 8:30 p.m. Friday, March 14, in the Singletary for the Arts Concert Hall. Both are free and open to the public.

Zappa will present the keynote address on Frank Zappa, the famous American composer, musician and film director. Her talk for the evening, "Some Composers Do Not Enjoy Water Sports," will include opinions on the late artist and her husband's intentions in his work.

"I married a composer," says Gail Zappa. "My day job, not unlike the Los Angeles Police Department, is to 'protect and serve' - protect the integrity of the work of the artist and serve the intent of the composer."

Her talk will be followed by "A Zappa Tribute: Inspirations and Music of American Composer Frank Zappa," a concert of Frank's work and other music that influenced him, performed by UK Chamber Winds and conducted by Michael Yonchak. The concert program will include performances of Frank's "Dog Breath Variations," "Envelopes" and "G-Spot Tornado," as well as Stravinsky's Octet and Edgard Varese's ''Ionisation.''
