Board Names New Research Professors

LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 4, 2008) − The University of Kentucky Board of Trustees today named four professors University Research Professors, a one-year designation to spur research productivity.  The designation carries a $35,000 award for one year.

The 2008-2009 Research Professors are:
  • John Anthony, professor of chemistry in the College of Arts and Sciences. Anthony, who is also the Gill Professor of Chemistry, focuses on organic synthesis and materials chemistry.  He is also a faculty associate with the UK Center for Applied Energy Research.  He came to UK in 1996 after performing postdoctoral work at the University of California at Los Angeles, where he also earned his doctorate.
  • Jonathan Glixon, professor of music in the College of Fine Arts. His research focuses on the music of Venice, including sacred music and 17th century opera; Renaissance and Baroque music; and early music performance practices.  He came to UK in 1983 after receiving his doctorate at Princeton University.
  • James Griffioen, professor of computer science in the College of Engineering.  His research focuses on computer networks and operating systems.  He is also director of the UK Laboratory for Advanced Networking.  He came to UK in 1991 after earning his doctoral degree at Purdue University.
  • Craig Rush, professor of behavioral science in the College of Medicine.  His research focuses on identifying putative pharmacotherapies for managing stimulant dependence.  He earned his doctorate at the University of Vermont.  Rush came to UK in 1999.
The Board of Trustees named its first Research Professors in 1977.  In addition to enhancing research productivity, the designation provides professors with an opportunity for concentrated research efforts.  It also recognizes outstanding research achievements.
