LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 16, 2007) − The University of Kentucky's DanceBlue fundraiser is today's
featured charity on GoodSearch.com, the newest high
tech way to contribute to charity.
GoodSearch is a search engine powered by Yahoo that donates half its revenue to the charities and schools designated by its users. UK students are hoping that Kentuckians choose DanceBlue to benefit the Pediatric Oncology Clinic at UK HealthCare’s Kentucky Children's Hospital.
The concept is similar to paid searches on Yahoo or Google, where advertisers pay a fee whenever Internet users click on a given link. Last year, search engines generated almost $6 billion through such searches.
Each time someone searches on GoodSearch however, about half of that advertising revenue from the search goes instead to the person's charity or school of choice, an estimated one cent per search. Users and non-profit organizations do not pay for the service.
Those pennies mount up. For example, if 500 people designated DanceBlue as their charity and each of those people made five Internet searches per day for a year, GoodSearch would give more than $9,000 to the UK charity.
"That is a huge contribution! The possibilities are endless!"said Nathan Simon, DanceBlue's corporate relations chair.

Last spring, after a full academic year of fundraising and 24 hours of non-stop dancing, 465 UK students celebrated raising $241,515, nearly double the 2005 total, on behalf of the Golden Matrix Fund. The fund provides families who have a child with cancer with emotional support and financial aid; supports pediatric cancer research at UK; and funds improvements to the facilities and services for pediatric cancer patients.
In addition to fundraising, student organizations are involved with the Adopt-A-Family program, which pairs students with the families of pediatric cancer patients. Students provide emotional support for the families and organize fun activities for the patients and siblings.
