LEXINGTON, KY (Oct. 10, 2007) - The University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy calls on alumni and friends to support student scholarships each year during the annual UK Phonathon. But this January, the Kroger Pharmacies Mid-South Division is challenging those who answer the call to follow their lead and give even more to support the college.

In June, Kroger Pharmacies agreed to partner with the UK College of Pharmacy and committed to match “dollar for dollar” any increased or new gifts to the College during the UK Phonathon set for Jan. 13 to 24, 2008. As part of the challenge, Kroger Pharmacies have given $35,000 in funding to be added to the college’s 2007 phonathon total. In addition, during the 2008 and 2009 phonathons, they will match each dollar a donor gives above their 2007 gift, and match the entire gift of first-time donors or those who didn’t give last year.

Kroger’s Mid South Division is based in Louisville and operates 162 food stores and 154 pharmacies in Kentucky, Tennessee, Southern Indiana and Southern Illinois.

The challenge is to encourage others to maximize their gifts, said Duane Parsons, pharmacy merchandiser for the Mid South Division of Kroger. “We hope this will energize all donors to give more than they would without this incentive; resulting in more support for the College,” he said.

In 2007, the UK College of Pharmacy secured $146,494 in total gifts and pledges, nearly doubling the amount raised in 2006.

To further recognize Kroger Pharmacies Mid South Division’s commitment to the UK College of Pharmacy, the college will honor them during the 2007 Association of Fundraising Professionals-National Philanthropy Day luncheon in November as an organization who exemplifies the ideals of philanthropy and gives of their time and resources to benefit the nonprofit community.

The UK College of Pharmacy is among the top 10 pharmacy schools in the nation and is an international leader in pharmacy education, clinical care and pharmaceutical research. The college has an enrollment of 490 students in the Doctor of Pharmacy program with more than 90 percent of students from Kentucky. Currently, a new 286,000-square-foot College of Pharmacy building is under construction on the UK campus. The new facility -- which will be the largest academic building ever built in Kentucky -- is targeted for completion in 2010 and will allow additional expansion of class sizes and clinical and research programs.
