LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 7, 2007) − For the second year, a local effort headed by the Colon Cancer Prevention Project will present “Catching a Killer,” a one-hour call in show on WLEX Channel 18 that will air from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, March 30.

Hosted by Nancy Cox, interviews will center on personal experiences with colon cancer survivors and health information from local medical specialists. A personal account from colon cancer survivor Joe B. Hall also will be featured. Phone lines will be open from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., staffed by medical professionals answering callers' questions about colorectal cancer.

Few cancers are as easily preventable as colon cancer. It has a more than 90 percent survival rate when detected early, yet it remains the number two cancer killer in Kentucky and the U.S. Only one in three colon cancers are currently being diagnosed at an early, treatable stage, and Kentucky ranks among one of the worst in the U.S. for applying known standards for colon cancer prevention.

UK HealthCare is a lead sponsor of the program. Other sponsors supporting the show are Kentucky Surgery Center, United Radiation Oncology, Central Baptist Hospital, GI Care Center, Ameripath, Pathology & Cytology Labs, Lexington Oncology Associates, Colorectal Surgical Associates, Lexington Surgery Center and Kentucky Cancer Consortium.

The mission of the Colon Cancer Prevention Project is to improve the quality of life in Kentucky and surrounding communities by preventing unnecessary suffering and premature death by colon cancer.
